Atlanta Georgia is, by anyone’s standards, a large and growing
city in the southern, United States. This particular image was taken from the
parking lot of the World of Coca-Cola. I have to admit on this trip to Atlanta
I received the
tour of the city and this rendering of part of the city’s
landscape really struck me. The architecture there seems to be very
symmetrical. While all architecture contains some symmetry Atlanta seems to
contain more than its fair share within its buildings designs.
Atlanta or as some have nicknamed it “hotlanta” is a very
diverse city. Aside from being extremely hot in the summer as an outsider
looking in it appeared to me that it was planned is a family friendly city
containing lots of activities centered on family time and enjoyment. The actual
list of attractions is huge. Atlanta is one of those cities that appear not to
sleep.
During this trip I got to see areas that many people do not
see when visiting the area. The City has vast wealth for the south but at the
same time has a large area of poor. The city appeared to me to have two classes
the upper middle and wealthy and the very poor. In the poorer sections the
homes seemed run down and the people were out and about struggling to make it
from day to day and then the well-off who had private communities and well-kept
homes and quiet neighborhoods. The
disparity is striking.
It almost seems that within a few blocks they go from the
splendor or abundance to utter poverty. I did not expect to see or experience
this while I was there. Maybe somewhat disillusioned, thinking that the city
would have few poor and that jobs, resources, and the like would be abundant.
The truth is Atlanta is far, far removed from that.
This rendering only illustrates the splendor of the city but
in fact there is another whole side to Atlanta that is not represented in this
image. That of the have-not’s, the poor and the struggling, the marginalized
and downtrodden. This was not captured in the image, on purpose, not because I
want it to disappear but due to time. When I do the images of the marginalized
I want to capture their stories, their lives and showing the individuals as
people and not just some socially outcast group.
I do have to admit I would visit again and look forward to
documenting some of “Atlanta” that is not captured in this image. With all that
said, I would still recommend people to visit and experience the city. At the
same time I would remind visitors that appearances may be deceiving as it is in
this rendering. So be mindful when visiting Atlanta be safe and explore.
Explore and take in the entire city not just the attractions but that which
many would wish would just go away, be swept under the rug and just disappear
to some other place and time.
